FIRST Robotics - NYC Regionals

On Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13, FIRST Robotics held its New York City Regional Competition at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. Teams of high school students from around the country and around the world brought their robots to compete in challenging games. David Solis, SHPE board member and Region 4 VP, served as one of the judges for some of the awards. SHPE-NYC was present as an exhibitor and explained to interested parties what SHPE was all about. SHPE-NYC was also interviewed by a local AM radio station at the event.

It's that time of the year, SHPE National Elections are here.

To be eligible to vote, one must be a paid registered member by February 15th. If you are considering running for office, this is the first requirement. Details at www.shpe.org/elections .

* February 15: Membership payment due to be eligible to run for office or vote
* March 15: Biography and nomination form(s) with signatures are due (official transcripts are also due for student positions)
* April 4: Ballots and biographies are sent to eligible voters
* April 25: Ballots are due by 6:00pm PST
* April 26: Ballots will be counted
* May 2: Winners and run-off election schedule (if necessary) announced
* July 1: Winners take office

Eastern Technical Leadership Conference 2011

I'd like to personally invite each and every SHPE member to attend the Eastern Technical Leadership Conference 2011 in Orlando, FL.  It is being held at the University of Central Florida's Orlando campus and will take place March 17 through March 19, 2011.

The Eastern Technical Leadership Conference 2011 is the first conference of its kind.  It is a combined Region 4 and Region 7 RLDC with aspects of ETCC added to it.  It will begin with a Welcome Reception on the evening of Thursday, March 17 where the winners of the Conference App Contest will be announced.  This will be followed by a full day (Friday) of workshops for pre-college students, undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals.  On Saturday, there will be workshops, a career fair, competitions, presentations, a gala banquet, and a closing networking reception.  There will be no events held on Sunday.

This conference is a truly unique one.  Rooms are filling up, so if you are interested, register now.  The planning committee has put a lot of effort in to make this one of the best conferences ever and yet kept the price very reasonable.

Google Hispanic College Fund Scholarship Program - due March 1, 2011

Google Hispanic College Fund Scholarship Program

The Google Scholarship Program offers funds to students studying computer science or computer engineering who are juniors or seniors in college, or pursuing a Master's or PhD. Selected scholars will be invited to an all-expenses paid trip to the Google Headquarters in California in the summer of 2011.

Application Deadline: March 1, 2011

Amount of Each Scholarship: $10,000

How to Apply: Complete the Google Scholarship Program Application

General HCF Eligibility Requirements:•Must be of Hispanic background
•Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident residing in the United States or Puerto Rico

SHPE Conference 2010 - Region 4-specific events

Region 4-specific events at the SHPE 2010 National Conference:

Friday from 5:00pm-6:30pm there will be a Region 4 all-hands meeting in the Conference Center's Junior Ballroom. This will consist of about 100-150 Region 4 members (all student and professional members who are attending the conference).

The USA Science and Engineering Festival

The USA Science and Engineering Festival took place at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Several SHPE members represented SHPE at a booth on Saturday and Sunday, October 23-24, 2010. This festival was nationally advertised and President Obama invited the nation to attend over television broadcast. You can also read the White House press release. There were approximately 500,000 visitors and over 1,000 exhibits covering a wide array of science or engineering groups and scientific breakthroughs.

Barrett Foa and Daniela Ruah from NCIS: Los Angeles were also there in the Lockheed Martin booth (Lockheed Martin does the graphics technology on the show). Barrett Foa talked about the USA Science and Engineering Festival on a CBS Baltimore morning show.

National Reporting Program (EOYR)

A message to chapter e-boads, both professional and student chapters...

The National Reporting Program has replaced the End-of-Year reports as you knew them. One large report is no longer submitted at the end of the fiscal year. It has been broken up into parts, and there is more criteria now. Student chapters must submit 3 reports during the course of the fiscal year, while professional chapters must submit 2 reports. There are also quite a few new requirements this year.

Schedule:
10/15 - student chapters' 1st reports are due
12/15 - professional chapters' 1st reports are due
02/01 - student chapters' 2nd reports are due
05/15 - student chapters' 3rd reports are due
06/15 - professional chapters' 2nd reports are due

Announcement: SHPE Region 4 conference call for professional and student chapter e-boards.

There will be 4 conference calls to choose from:

ETLC is SHPE's Eastern Technical Leadership Conference. It is the combination of the Region 4 RLDC (Regional Leadership and Development Conference), Region 7 RLDC, and ETCC (Eastern Technical Leadership Conference). ETLC combines aspects of all 3 events and replaces those events entirely in 2011.

ETLC will be held in Orlando from March 17, 2011 through March 20, 2011. The University of Central Florida in Orlando will be the hosting chapter.

Plan to arrive the afternoon of March 17 for a Welcome Reception in the evening. March 18 and 19 will be full days of events, ending with a banquet the night of the 19th. There are no events on March 20th.

The deadline for confirmation of regional roundup articles to be included for SHPE Magazine's Conference 2010 issue is September 2nd. Please respond to shpemag@shpe.org with your confirmation. One submission per chapter and all submissions must be in Word format (no PowerPoint, PDFs, or graphics embedded in document). Articles/Photos are not due at this time.

Your article/photo should be sent to shpemag@shpe.org by September 9th. Please include chapter name and region, author's name, author's title within chapter, email address, and phone number. If you are submitting a photo, please include a short caption for it. The article must not exceed 200 words in length, and all photos must be submitted in JPG format at 300 dpi and a 4x5 size or equivalent (file size must be 500K or more). Photos and articles are run on a space-available basis.

My name is Ivana Sapon. I am a Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Major and Science & Technology Studies Minor at Polytechnic Institute of NYU. This past summer I worked for Goldman Sachs Execution & Clearing (GSEC) Operations in the Buy-In and Fail & Exposure Management teams. My key contribution to Goldman Sachs Operations was my ability to use my engineering problem solving skills to mitigate risk for the firm. Senior management and my direct managers valued my ability to make a process more efficient and because of this I was able to add value. As a summer analyst, I was given exposure to all divisions within the firm through learning series, brown bag lunches, one-on-one meetings, and diversity networks. Even though I was not in a traditional chemical engineering role, this internship exposed me to the financial industry and allowed me to leverage a wide range of skill sets.

My name is Jose Maldonado. I received my bachelors degree in Computer Science at the CUNY - City College, where I am also actively pursuing my masters degree in Computer Science. I had a very positive experience at Goldman Sachs. I felt I was challenged from the first day of my internship to the very last. I was given a great project to work on and was found myself learning numerous new technologies in order to solve real world Computer Science/Engineering problems. In addition to my project, the summer interns would attend learning sessions, which provided insight into how company operates and how the different divisions work together. Working in the financial sector exposed me to many fascinating concepts and skills.

Student Membership

Who is elegible for student membership?
Student membership is open to all engineering, math, physical, applied, and computer science majors. All others are invited to become associate members. Graduate students have the option to join SHPE either as a student or Professional Chapter. If you choose not to be affiliated with a chapter on your campus, you will be considered an "At-Large" member, classified by your geographical region. Members "At-Large" receive the same benefits as those who belong to a chapter.

What is the membership term?
The Student Membership term lasts from July 1st to June 30th. Students must renew their membership on a yearly basis to be eligible for membership benefits.

What happens when I graduate?
For persons who qualify for regular membership and have graduated less than six (6) months ago. This person will receive a one year free membership and is entitled to all mentioned under Regular/Professional Members.

What are the annual dues?
Annual collegiate student membership dues are $5.00, and may be paid directly to SHPE National Headquarters or your chapter. Chapters may charge Chapter Dues, and these fees are in addition to the national dues.

Hola SHPE Familia!

My name is Rafael Reynoso-Castro. It is with great honor to serve as the 2010-2011 SHPE Region IV Student Representative (RSR). I currently attend George Mason University, located in Fairfax, Virginia. This year I will work with you, your chapter and Region IV as a whole to make certain that SHPE continues to be the Source for Quality Hispanic Professional Engineers and Technical Talent.

I will be working side by side with Region IV Vice President David Solis. We serve as your representatives on a national level to ensure that our region continues progressing in the direction of SHPE’s vision. Together we will work to facilitate communication in our region. We will also focus our efforts on increasing membership across the region, not only in our universities, but also through SHPE Jr. Chapters and Professional Chapters.

SHPE Region 4 Vice President Welcome Message

I am David Solis from the New York City professional chapter of SHPE. I feel honored and privileged to have just begun my 2010-2012 term as Region 4 Vice President. As my first message to my SHPE colleagues in Region 4, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all those who have played a role in making our region as strong as it is today. The continued success of SHPE truly is a team effort, and the growth of SHPE comes from not only large milestones, but from the collective efforts of every contributor -- no matter how small or large the contribution.

Region IV is the largest region in SHPE by membership. There are, however, still quite a few untapped areas of potential growth. I look forward to working Rafael Reynoso (Region 4 RSR) and with each sub-region to continue to expand the presence of SHPE -- in high schools, in colleges, and in professional chapters. Through teamwork, we can set high goals, formulate ways to achieve those goals, and work together to realize those goals.

I hope to meet many of you at NILA this August, 2010. For those of you who I will not have met at NILA, I look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming sub-regional retreats or at the National Conference in Cincinnati this October, 2010. Another event that is on the horizon will be SHPE ETLC 2011. SHPE ETLC 2011 will be the combined event for ETCC, Region 4 RLDC, and Region 7 RLDC.

Last, but not least, I want to extend my deepest thanks to Dora Maria Abreu for her dedication this past 2 years as Region 4 VP 2008-2010. Dora has done a phenomenal job strengthening the region where it was weak. Her hands-on approach from high school students through professionals has really paid off in terms of the success of our region. I hope to foster what Dora has brought to our region.

Reminder: Noche de Ciencias Application Deadline, August 23, 2010

The Noches De Ciencias (Family Science Nights) are a series of awareness events that host K-12 students to promote knowledge, awareness, interest and motivation about science and engineering and scholarship and college opportunities.

Grade appropriate hands-on activities are hosted during the 3-hour events. In addition, Spanish and English workshops for parents on college choice and financial aid should be hosted.

Institute which includes seminars designed to nurture the development
of future faculty and researchers. AHETEMS, Inc. and The National GEM

In partnership with AHETEMS, Inc., the SHPE Conference includes an
extensive pre-college program that exposes Hispanic youth to science,
technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Students from 7th to 12th
grade explore the many career opportunities in these STEM fields.
These students are the engineers and technical leaders of tomorrow.

High School Track: 300 non-local high school students will attend the
2.5-day program; an additional 400 local high school students from
Washington DC and surrounding areas will be invited to attend.the one
day program on Friday, October 30, 2009.

Middle School Track: 250 local middle school students from Washington
DC will be hosted during the day-long program on Friday, October 30,
2009.
